Fenders by themselves won't keep you dry in a pounding rain, but they make a tremendous difference when you are riding roads that are wet from drizzle, recent rain, or snowmelt.

You can probably skip the fenders if: You prize clean lines and simplicity above all. You're racing (fenders add extra weight). You're planning to change clothes at your destination and don't mind wet feet and ankles en route.
